Paracosm Review
Once Again, choreographed by Scott Pokorny and Tim Barnes, featured Mathilda Ballantyne as a soloist. Ballantyne embodied the qualities of a seasoned contemporary dancer - physical dexterity, strength, faultless technique and freedom. Pokorny and Barnes interweaved effective opposition, allowing Ballantyne to challenge her centre of gravity while maintaining the poetic quality of her movements. Ballantyne is a true talent and a joy to watch.
Altered Trajectory, choreographed by Sarah Boulter, was a whole company piece that explored the seemingly inconsequential moments that alter the trajectory of our lives, toying with the ‘what if’, intuition and the vibrations of life. Boulter illustrated this very clearly in the arrangement of the piece, and the dancers had the artistic ability and creativity to express Boulter's ideas well. The fluidity of this piece was awe-inspiring; it was so impressive to see the dancers move like water from one movement to the next. The transitions from high to low were well-controlled, demonstrating the sheer strength of the dancers. Altered Trajectory’s big highlight was how the choreography showcased the dancer's talent. The dancers made the most challenging choreography look like a breeze - a true mark of a professional performer. The lighting defined key moments like the incredible floor work and inversions.
Paracosm, choreographed by Scott Pokorny and Tim Barnes with input and choreography from company dancers, was a collaboration between technology, sound, and movement. The projector framed the dancers and married their energy well; it was a highly captivating effect. This piece had a spectacular build, illustrating the choreographer's intention to show the dancers detaching from their original bodies. The choreographers explored the concept of escapism through vibratory and percussive movements; it was highly effective and created great depth in the choreography. The pas de deux sections were nothing short of effortless, making it clear that the dancers built the piece on trust and alliance. It was great to see smaller groups that highlighted each dancer's strengths. The shapes that were so carefully curated and perfectly placed created an overall balance and harmony within the piece. Paracosm was intriguing and profound. It took the audience on a journey out of reality and into Scimm. Dance Company’s imaginary world.
Paracosm was an exquisite display of contemporary dance married with top-class choreography. The dancers at Scimm. Dance Company are the real deal.
